"We need to leave behind the idea that culture is something extra-ordinary. Culture is ordinary. Culture is like rice and beans. It is a fundamental right. It needs to be on everyone's table. For that to happen, we need to make an active effort to disseminate this idea. Many people, including most policymakers, think that culture is something exceptional. To take culture seriously is to take your life seriously. Because everything is culture. Culture is everything built up by people. All of that is culture. That is exactly why we call it political culture, scientific culture, religious culture. Culture is everything."
Levedura (yeast, or levain in Portuguese) is a collective blog created by many hands to bring scientific and sociological discussions to as many people as possible. Part of the Brazilian research group Science in Life, this blog is a network of several people from different areas who collaborate to expand access to the information and knowledge produced within universities and beyond.
The name “Levedura” is a common noun. In the dictionary, its definition is a family of fungi, saccharomycetaceous, which are responsible for the fermentation process. Therefore, Levedura is also a collective but one of non-human actors. Like our blog, levain is in a constant process of expansion when met with favourable conditions.
Like culture and bread, Levedura is an experience of exchanging: texts, podcasts, information, experiences, knowledge, etc. Here you’ll find texts about machine learning, AI, hormones, health, social justice, Taylor Swift, games, education, and so much more. After all, as Gilberto Gil explained, culture is everything and, therefore, profoundly ordinary. We invite you to join this network and share our levedura!
